How to find the right Financial Adviser for you?

Financial Planning

Most Australians find a Financial Adviser through a referral from family, friends, or another professional such as an Accountant. This can be a good start but how do you know you've got a good one?

You won't at first and that's okay, just like repairing your car or renovating your home it's best to get a few quotes. Meet with at least 3 Financial Advisers, most may offer a free initial consultation and if not be prepared to pay a small fee, we're talking about your financial future you can afford to interview a few.

Now there are some items you may want to look out for:

  1. Check your adviser is licensed, you can do this through the Moneysmart website.
  2. Does your adviser have ties to product providers? And are they recommending those same products? Your Super fund is only going to recommend their funds, your bank is only going to recommend their loan products.
  3. Is your adviser just trying to recommend their own investment products?
  4. What is your Adviser recommending you invest in, it is unlisted assets, private debt, private equity get to know the risks around some of these investments and be sure there not to complicated or risky for you.
  5. Does the conversation with your Adviser focus on what's important to you? Not just your goals but also your preferences, you may prefer ethical or low-cost index investments etc. If not, you may need to keep looking.
  6. Does your Adviser focus on your overall strategy or are they just pushing products? Your strategy should dictate where you need a product, not the other way around.
  7. Does your Adviser explain things clearly, in a way that you both understand and could explain to someone else what you're doing, why you're doing it and what the risks involved are. This will help you be more confident in your plan.
  8. Does it sound too good to be true, then it probably is? This quote has been used to death, but message is as true as ever.

Listen to your gut not your greed, be cautious and always do your own homework.

Financial Advice is for everyone.
